Becki Rutta has explored still-life and landscape photography, but has worked most extensively with portraiture. Drawn to the people in her immediate environment, she has taken intimate portraits of the disabled in assisted living communities, her father struggling with a terminal illness, and the diverse students attending vocational school. She is trained both in fine-art photography and as a commercial photography technician. In her portraits, she seeks above all to humanize her subjects by encouraging them to project their individuality and personality. She considers each portrait to be a collaboration between photographer, sitter, and environment.
